FRESH - Forwarding Regional Environmental Sustainable Hierarchies

– Issued by South West Regional Authority January 2010

The South West Regional Authority, in cooperation with the Mid West Regional Authority and University of Limerick, are about to embark on a European Project under the INTERREG IVC Programme, in partnership with several other EU countries, namely: Finland, Italy, Poland, Romania, and UK.

The Monitoring Committee of the INTERREG IVC Programme approved on the 5th of November 2009 the FRESH Project, Forwarding Regional Environmental Sustainable Hierarchies.

The overall objective of the FRESH Project is to strengthen Sustainable Value Creation (SVC) based development at regional level and to contribute to the implementation of the Environmental Technologies Action Plan (ETAP-COM 38/2004) - with special focus on eco-design and ecoinnovation.

ETAP is an initiative of the EC, jointly coordinated by DG Research and DG Environment. It has been formulated following a request by the Gothenburg Council in June 2001.

The purpose of ETAP is to develop environmental technologies and contribute simultaneously to sustainability and competitiveness. Thus FRESH project is seeking to disseminate Good Practice (GP) of regional development policies and instruments promoting environmental sustainability and economic competitiveness.

The FRESH Project will begin implementation on the 1st January 2010 for a period of 3 years. The South West region’s focused theme will centre on developing sustainable value creation in bioenergy applications in the tourism sector.

During the project duration, each Partner region will test and implement a series of tools for dealing both with economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability.

On the 21st & 22nd January 2010, the FRESH Project will be officially launched in Ireland.

As part of this Project launch, the Irish Partners are organising an Interregional Seminar on 21st January 2009 in University of Limerick. The seminar will be attended by delegates from all the participating countries as well as dignitaries and interested parties from Ireland and abroad.
